FISA Flotation Standard.\u00a0 As the industry leader,\u00a0 meeting the most advanced safety standards is an important part of our commitment to growing the great sport of rowing. FISA\u00a0 requires all boats used in their sanctioned events to carry a permanently mounted\u00a0 plaque<\/g> stating whether or not, it meets their\u00a0 flotation<\/g> standards.\u00a0 To comply,\u00a0 a boat containing a rower\/crew cannot sink further than two inches above the seat and documentation proving this must be submitted to FISA. \u00a0 Similar to the FISA\u00a0 minimum boat weight rule and the coxswain weight minimum, the\u00a0 responsibility<\/g> of\u00a0 “proof” rests with the boat users and is subject to random inspection.\u00a0\u00a0 Failure to meet any\u00a0 FISA requirement can lead to disqualification.\u00a0 We anticipate USRowing and RowingCanada<\/g> will likely adopt this\u00a0 flotation<\/g> standard just as they have adopted all of the other FISA rules and regulations. We began testing and qualification back in 2009 and finished all of our racing models from, singles to eights, last fall.\u00a0 All Vespoli Matrix, Ultralite II, M2 and V1 models built in 2010 meet the FISA flotation standard. <\/strong>We have installed water tight compartments and\u00a0 newly<\/g> designed, water tight hatches in each rower’s compartment\u00a0 for<\/g> the necessary buoyancy.\u00a0 Each eight, four and quad\u00a0 also<\/g> has two,\u00a0 push out portal caps easily accessible to cox and\/or rower\u00a0 that<\/g> allows water to flow out if the water level in the boat reaches nearly two inches above the seat. The\u00a0 “passive” removal of water was tested and chosen over the method where rowers\u00a0 in<\/g> crew boats try to achieve sufficient stern-ward momentum to push the water out of a deck vent. \u00a0Trying to coordinate rowers in a stressful situation to forcefully move up the tracks to “slosh” out the water (up to a ton of extra<\/g> weight)\u00a0 increases the risk of capsizing.\u00a0 When the water reaches the portal caps\u00a0 using<\/g> our method, the caps are easily removed and incoming water flows out without requiring the crew to move.
